Best Sunset Spots in Tulum You Can Reach by Scooter (2026)

Published on May 10, 2026 by Ally — RST Tulum • 9 min read

Tulum sunsets are different from what most travelers expect. Because the beach faces east, the sun doesn't drop into the ocean — it sets behind you, over the jungle, the lagoon, and the long flat horizon to the west. Once you understand that, the whole map of where to be at golden hour shifts. The best sunsets in Tulum aren't on the beach. They're at the laguna, along the inland edge of the beach road, on rooftops in Aldea Zama, and a few quiet places that locals keep mostly to themselves.

The good news for scooter riders: every spot in this guide is well within easy scooter range from town. No highways, no long-distance hauls, no white-knuckle nighttime rides. Just short, scenic local roads, easy parking, and a sky that does the work for you.

I've ridden every one of these routes, parked in every one of these spots, and learned the hard way which places are worth the detour. Here's where I'd send you on your first sunset in Tulum — and what to keep in mind so you're not riding home in full dark.

Quick rule of thumb: Leave town 60 minutes before sunset, plan to be off the scooter within 30 minutes of last light, and always keep your headlight on after 5:30 pm. Tulum drivers are forgiving, but visibility drops fast once the sky turns pink.

1. Laguna Kaan Luum — The Tulum Sunset Locals Love

If you only pick one sunset spot in Tulum, make it Laguna Kaan Luum. It's a turquoise circular lagoon about 8 km south of town with a long wooden dock that points directly into the western sky. The water mirrors the sunset, the dock empties out as the sun drops, and the whole thing feels more like a private viewing platform than a public attraction.

How to ride there

From La Veleta or central Tulum, head south on Avenida Tulum and follow signs for Laguna Kaan Luum. It's about a 15-minute scooter ride on local roads. Entry is around 200 pesos. There's a paved parking area inside — chain your scooter under one of the trees.

What makes it special

Plan to leave by: 7:00 pm in summer, 6:15 pm in winter. The road back to town isn't lit, so don't push it.

2. Tulum Beach Road — Lagoon-Facing Sandbar Spots

The beach road (Carretera Tulum-Boca Paila) runs north-south along the coast. The east side faces the ocean. The west side, almost no one talks about, faces the lagoon — and that's where the sunset actually happens. A handful of low-key bars and small palapa restaurants sit on the lagoon side with hammocks, swings, and elevated decks pointing west into the sunset.

Where to park

Most lagoon-side spots have small dirt pull-offs for scooters and bikes. Park, walk down a short path, and you'll usually find a spot with a drink menu and a view. This is a much easier scooter scene than the ocean-side beach clubs, which charge for parking and fill up fast.

What to look for

Pro tip: The light from a lagoon-side palapa hits the bridge between the two sides of the beach road in a way that turns absolutely everything golden. It's one of my favorite ten-minute windows in all of Tulum.

3. Aldea Zama Rooftop Bars

Aldea Zama is the upscale residential neighborhood between Tulum Pueblo and the beach. It's on slightly higher ground, and over the last few years a small cluster of rooftop bars and restaurants has opened that point west over the jungle canopy. The view is unexpectedly cinematic — flat green treetops to the horizon, with the sun dropping into the jungle rather than the sea.

How to ride there

Aldea Zama is a 5–7 minute ride from Tulum Pueblo or La Veleta. The streets are paved, well-lit, and quiet. There's free street parking everywhere — just chain to a post or sign.

What's nice about it

4. The Tulum Ruins Cliff at Closing Hour

This is a sleeper. Most travelers visit the Tulum Ruins early to beat the heat, but the late-afternoon entry — about an hour before closing — gives you the cliff with almost no one on it. The ruins themselves face east, but the cliff edge has a long western flank where the light hits the limestone and turns the whole site gold.

Logistics

The ruins close at 5:00 pm, so this works best from October through March when the sun sets earlier. Buy your ticket by 4:00 pm at the latest. Park your scooter in the main lot — there's dedicated scooter parking close to the entrance.

Why it's worth it

5. Playa Las Palmas (Public Beach North End)

Tulum's public beach access points are free, sandy, and almost always have a few palapas selling cold drinks. The far north end of the public beach gets a lovely soft-pink reflected sunset light around 6:30 pm — not as dramatic as a true western view, but the combination of palm trees, sand, and pastel sky is what most people are imagining when they picture "Tulum sunset."

Practical notes

6. Boca Paila Bridge

The Boca Paila bridge sits at the southern end of the beach road, where the road crosses the gap between the lagoon and the open sea. Stand on the bridge at 6:30 pm and you have water on both sides, the sun setting over the lagoon to your west, and a soft afterglow on the ocean to your east. It's a 360-degree sky moment you can't really replicate anywhere else in Tulum.

How to ride there

It's the southernmost paved point of the beach road, about 30 minutes from town on a scooter. Park at one of the small pullouts on either side of the bridge — there's room for two or three scooters. Don't park on the bridge itself.

What to keep in mind

7. The Lagoon Side of La Veleta

Most travelers don't realize that La Veleta — the up-and-coming neighborhood where most of our scooter customers stay — has its own little sunset moment. The western edge of the neighborhood backs onto open scrubland and small bodies of water, and several rooftop apartments and casual mezcal bars have installed west-facing decks. You can ride three minutes from your Airbnb to a sunset rooftop without ever crossing a major road.

8. The Beach Road's Sand-Path Cenote Stops (Honorable Mention)

A few small cenotes hide along the inland side of the beach road — well-marked but easy to miss at speed. They're not classic sunset spots, but the way the light filters through the jungle around them in the last 30 minutes of daylight is something most travelers never see. Pair one with an early dinner and you've turned a pre-sunset hour into the most memorable part of your day.

One safety note about night riding: Tulum's beach road is famously dark after sunset and a few stretches don't have functioning streetlights. If you're staying for the full sunset on the beach side, plan to leave 20 minutes before full dark, ride slowly, and keep your headlight on. If you'd rather not ride after dark at all, stick to the Laguna, Aldea Zama, and La Veleta options — all are an easy daylight ride home.

How to Plan a Three-Stop Sunset Loop on Your Scooter

Here's the sequence I'd recommend for a first sunset in Tulum, if you have one evening to make it count:

  1. 4:30 pm: Leave La Veleta. Ride south to Laguna Kaan Luum. Pay entry, walk to the dock, take photos, dip your feet in.
  2. 5:45 pm: Ride 12 minutes north to a lagoon-side palapa bar on the beach road for the actual sunset moment with a drink.
  3. 7:00 pm: Ride back into town and finish the evening at an Aldea Zama rooftop or La Veleta dinner spot.

Total scooter time: under an hour, all on quiet local roads, no highway, no night riding past 7:30 pm. This is the kind of evening Tulum is built for, and it's almost impossible to do without your own wheels.

FAQ

What time is sunset in Tulum?

Roughly 6:00 pm in December and 7:30 pm in late June. Aim to arrive 30–45 minutes before to settle in.

Is the sunset better on the lagoon side or the ocean side?

Lagoon side. Tulum's beach faces east, so the sun sets behind the beach, not over the ocean. The dramatic sky color happens to the west — over the laguna, the jungle, and the inland horizon.

Can I do a sunset and dinner on the same scooter trip?

Absolutely — it's the most common request we get. Aim to be at your sunset spot 45 minutes before last light, and book a dinner reservation 90 minutes after sunset to give yourself a relaxed transition.

Is it safe to ride a scooter at sunset and after?

At sunset, yes, with care and a working headlight. After full dark, only on lit roads — La Veleta, Aldea Zama, Tulum Pueblo. The beach road and Laguna Kaan Luum road are not lit, so plan to be home before then. For more on this, see our post on scooter safety in Tulum.

Do I need a license to ride my scooter to these sunset spots?

You'll want to check our guide on scooter licensing in Tulum — short answer is that any valid driver's license from your home country is generally accepted.

Final Thoughts

The thing about Tulum sunsets is that they're easy to miss. If you wait for someone to invite you to a beach club, or for the right table at the right rooftop, or for a tour to pick you up, you'll spend half your trip looking up at a pink sky from the wrong place. With a scooter you decide. You leave when the light starts to soften, you ride to the spot you've been thinking about, and you watch the day turn over with an unhurried drink in your hand.

Out of all the things a scooter unlocks in Tulum, sunset access is the one I'd argue for hardest. The town wasn't designed for cars and the taxis don't run on golden-hour schedules. Two wheels, a helmet, and ten minutes of planning — that's the whole formula.
