Families and friend groups ask me this all the time, usually right before they book: "My son is 17, can he ride?" or "My dad is 72, is that a problem?" The minimum age to rent a scooter in Tulum matters more than people expect, because it decides who in your group can actually be the named driver, and that decides which vehicle makes sense for your trip.
Here is exactly how age works at Rent A Scooter Tulum, what changes between scooters, ATVs and cars, and what to do if someone in your group is under the limit.
The Short Answer: Minimum Age to Rent a Scooter in Tulum Is 18
To rent and ride a scooter with us you must be at least 18 years old and hold a valid, full driver's license from your home country. Both conditions apply to the person riding, not just the person paying. A parent cannot book a scooter for a 16-year-old to ride on their own, even if the parent signs everything.
- Scooter: 18+ with a valid driver's license
- ATV: 18+ drivers with a valid driver's license; younger passengers with adult supervision
- Car: 21+ with a valid driver's license; extra drivers added at pickup with their license
- Upper age limit: none
If you are not sure your license counts, read our guide to the license you need to rent a scooter in Tulum first. The short version: a full license from home is fine, an International Driving Permit is a nice extra, and learner's permits do not count at any age.
Why the Scooter Rental Age Limit Is 18
It comes down to two things: the law and the insurance.
- The law. In Quintana Roo you need a valid license to operate any motor vehicle, scooters included. A teenager with a provisional or learner's license from home is not licensed to ride here.
- The insurance. The coverage included with every scooter rental in Tulum only protects a named rider who meets the age and license conditions. An underage rider is simply not covered, which means any damage, injury or police issue lands on the family personally.
Any shop that will hand keys to a 15-year-old is also skipping the license check, and that is the same shop that will skip the insurance. I wrote more about that pattern in how to avoid scooter rental scams in Tulum.
ATV Rental Age in Tulum: 18 to Drive, Younger Riders as Passengers
ATVs follow the same rule for the driver: 18+ with a valid license. The difference is that ATVs work well for families. A teenager can ride as a passenger behind a parent on the jungle trails and sandy back roads, which is often the best compromise when a 15- or 16-year-old is desperate to be part of the adventure.
ATVs are built for off-road tracks, ranchos and cenote roads, not for town traffic, so plan an ATV day around the trails. You can see the models and what is included on our ATV rental page.
Car Rental Age in Tulum: 21 and Over
The minimum age to rent a car with us is 21. Every driver needs a valid license, and any additional driver is added at pickup with their license in hand.
A car is also the right answer for any trip that leaves the local area. Scooters are not allowed on Mexican federal highways, so if your plans include Playa del Carmen, Akumal, Cobá, Valladolid, Chichén Itzá or Bacalar, the driver needs to be 21+ and you need a car rental in Tulum, not a scooter. That is a legal rule, not a preference.
Is There a Maximum Age to Rent a Scooter in Tulum?
No. We have no upper age limit. Some of our happiest regulars are retirees who spend the winter here and ride every day. What matters is that you are comfortable on two wheels.
My honest advice for older riders and anyone who has not ridden in years:
- Start with an automatic scooter. There are no gears, just twist and go.
- Take a few slow laps around La Veleta or Aldea Zama before heading anywhere busy.
- Ride Beach Road in the morning, when traffic is lighter.
- If balance or knees are a concern, a car is not a downgrade. It is just the better tool.

The age rule is about who drives. Passengers are a separate question, and safety comes first:
- Everyone wears a helmet. Helmets are mandatory in Mexico for the rider and the passenger, and we hand them over with every rental.
- The passenger must sit securely, reach the footrests with both feet and hold on without help. If they cannot, they should not be on a scooter.
- Two people maximum. Never three on one scooter, whatever you see locals doing.
- Small children belong in a car. For toddlers and young kids, a car with proper seating is the safe choice.
What to Bring at Pickup (Every Age)
Whoever is riding should have these ready when you collect your vehicle at our pickup point on Sur 8 in La Veleta, or when we bring it to you with scooter delivery in Tulum:
- A valid, full driver's license for every rider or driver (we check dates of birth from this)
- A payment card. No cash deposit and we never keep your passport
- Your booking confirmation on your phone
If one person books for the group, that is fine, but each rider's own license must match the vehicle they ride. For the money side, see what you actually leave as a scooter rental deposit in Tulum.
Common Situations, Solved
"We're a family with a 16-year-old."
Rent one scooter for a parent and the teen as passenger around town, or an ATV for a trail day with the teen behind a parent. For highway day trips, a car with a 21+ driver.
"Two of us are 19 and 20."
Scooters and ATVs, yes. A car, no. Keep your plans to the local area: Tulum Pueblo, the Hotel Zone, the ruins and nearby cenotes. For anything further, book a tour or transport with a driver.
"I'm 70 and haven't ridden in 20 years."
No problem on our side. Do a practice loop at pickup, ride in daylight, and tell us if you would like the lightest, most stable model.
The Bottom Line
- Minimum age to rent a scooter in Tulum: 18, with a valid driver's license
- ATVs: 18+ to drive, younger riders as supervised passengers
- Cars: 21+, and the only legal option for highway trips
- No upper age limit, ever
