Scooter Rental Delivery in Tulum: How Booking, Drop-Off & Return Work (2026)

The question I get more than almost any other is not about price or licences — it is "how do I actually get the scooter?" People land in Cancun, take a shuttle down, check into a villa in La Veleta at nine at night, and have no idea whether they are supposed to walk somewhere in the morning or whether someone turns up at the gate.

So here is the whole thing, start to finish. I have been renting scooters to visitors in Tulum for over five years, and this is exactly how a delivery rental runs: what you do when you book, what happens at the handover, what you are responsible for while you have it, and how the return works.

How Scooter Rental Delivery Works in Tulum

Delivery means we bring the vehicle to where you are staying instead of you finding your way to a shop. That matters here more than in most towns, because Tulum's accommodation is spread across neighbourhoods that are a long, hot walk apart, and taxis charge tourist prices for every one of those hops.

In practice it is four steps:

• Book online with your dates, the vehicle you want, and where you are staying.
• Agree a delivery window — we confirm by WhatsApp, usually within the hour.
• Handover at your address: paperwork, walk-around, helmets, keys.
• Return — we collect from the same place, or you drop it on Sur 8 in La Veleta.

Step 1: Booking — What You Need to Have Ready

You can book from your phone in a couple of minutes, but have these four things to hand:

Your dates and times, not just days

A rental day runs from the time you take the scooter, not from midnight. If you collect at 2pm, your day ends at 2pm. Booking a 10am start when your flight lands at 4pm just wastes half a day, so put in the real time.

The address you are actually staying at

Property name plus neighbourhood is usually enough — "Casa X, La Veleta" or the hotel name on the beach road. Airbnb listings are notoriously vague about their exact location, so if you have a pin from your host, send it. It saves a driver circling a sandy street for twenty minutes.

A valid driver's licence

Unexpired, from your home country. An International Driving Permit is handy but not required. The name on the licence has to match the name on the booking. There is a full breakdown in our guide to licence requirements in Tulum.

Who is riding

If two of you will swap riding duties, say so at booking so both licences get recorded. A rider who is not on the agreement is not covered, and that is a bad thing to discover after a scrape.

Step 2: Where We Deliver (and Where Scooters Can't Go)

Delivery covers the areas visitors actually stay in:

• Tulum Pueblo (Centro) — hotels and hostels along and behind the main avenue
• Aldea Zama — condos and apartment buildings
• La Veleta — villas and rentals on the sand roads
• Region 15 — the residential side, increasingly full of rentals
• The Hotel Zone — the beach road hotels, subject to access and traffic

All of those are inside town on local roads, which is exactly where a scooter belongs. Tulum Pueblo, the beach road, the ruins and the cenotes within about ten kilometres on local roads are perfect scooter territory.

What we cannot do is deliver outside Tulum, and the reason is legal rather than logistical: scooters are not permitted on Mexico's federal highways, including Carretera Federal 307 outside town. That rules out riding to or from Cancun airport (around 130 km), Playa del Carmen (around 65 km), Akumal, Puerto Aventuras, Bacalar, Valladolid or Chichen Itza.

If your plans include any of those, you want four wheels. Our car rental in Tulum is the right vehicle for highway trips and day trips beyond about 25 km, and it can be delivered the same way. If your plan is jungle tracks, ranchos and sandy back roads instead, look at ATV rental.

Step 3: The Handover — What Actually Happens

Budget about ten to fifteen minutes. Here is what those minutes are spent on.

Paperwork

The rental agreement gets signed at the handover, on paper or on a phone. Your licence is photographed. Read the return time and the fuel expectation before you sign — those are the two things people misremember later.

The walk-around

This is the part worth paying attention to. Photograph the scooter yourself, all four sides plus the mirrors, before you ride off. Existing scuffs get noted on both sides so nobody argues about them at the end. Helmets

Two helmets come with the scooter and helmets are legally required for rider and passenger. Try them on at the handover rather than discovering at the first tope that the strap is set for someone else's head.

The quick briefing

If you have not ridden an automatic scooter before, say so. It takes three minutes in a quiet street to get comfortable with a twist throttle and two brake levers, and it is much better done at the handover than in traffic on the main avenue.

Fuel

The scooter arrives with fuel in it and should go back with a similar amount. Filling a scooter tank in Tulum costs very little, so this is rarely a real cost — it is just a thing to remember on the last morning.

Step 4: While You Have It

Park in the shade where you can, use the seat lock rather than leaving anything under it overnight, and keep the rental paperwork and your licence with you when you ride. Police checks happen on the main avenue and they ask for licence and helmet.

If anything goes wrong — a flat, a scooter that will not start after a rainstorm, a puncture on the way back from a cenote — message the WhatsApp number from the handover. Breakdowns are handled by coming to you, not by leaving you to work it out. That is the single biggest practical reason to rent from a company that delivers: the same people who brought it to you can come and get it.

Step 5: The Return

Two options, both fine:

• Collection — we come to the same address at the end time on your booking. Leave the helmets with the scooter and message when it is parked.
• Drop-off — bring it to Sur 8 in La Veleta, which is where vehicles are handed over and collected.

If you have a 5am airport shuttle, arrange an evening-before collection when you book. It costs nothing and it means you are not trying to raise anyone at dawn.
