Car Rental in Tulum: Requirements, Deposit & Insurance (2026)

Published November 1, 2026 by Ally — RST Tulum, a Tulum local for 5+ years, at Rent A Scooter Tulum

Most of our customers rent a scooter for getting around town, but the moment a trip includes Playa del Carmen, Cobá, Valladolid or Bacalar, the right answer is a car. That is not me upselling you. Scooters are not allowed on Mexican federal highways, and Highway 307 is how you get almost anywhere outside Tulum.

So the next question is always the same: "What do I need to rent a car in Tulum?" Here is the full checklist, the way it actually works at our counter, plus the traps to watch for if you compare companies.

Car Rental Tulum Requirements: The Short Checklist

That is genuinely it. No cash deposit, no passport left behind, no proof of address.

Driver's licence: what counts

A full licence from your home country works in Mexico for visitors. Learner's permits, provisional licences and expired cards do not. An International Driving Permit is not required, but it translates your licence into Spanish, which makes any roadside check faster. It has to be issued in your home country before you travel. If you want the long version, read our licence guide for renting in Tulum; the same rules apply to cars.

Minimum age to rent a car in Tulum

Every driver must be 21+. Extra drivers are added at pickup, and each one shows their own licence. If someone in your group is 18 to 20, they can still ride with a scooter rental in Tulum for in-town trips, but they cannot drive the car. More detail in our age rules post.

Every driver, every time: If a person is not on the rental and not 21+ with a licence, they should not be behind the wheel. That is the fastest way to lose your insurance protection.

Tulum Car Rental Deposit: What You Actually Leave

This is where Tulum rentals vary the most. Some companies ask for a large cash deposit, some want to hold your passport, and some quote a low daily price at the airport and then add a credit-card hold of several thousand dollars at the desk.

Here is how ours works: no deposit, and we never keep your passport. We place a US$300 authorization on your card at pickup. It is a hold, not a charge, and it is released after the car comes back. Make sure your card has room for it and let your bank know you are travelling so the hold is not declined.

We accept card, Venmo and cash for the rental itself. Card payments carry a 5% card fee at checkout.

Is Insurance Included With a Car Rental in Tulum?

With us, yes. Every car rental in Tulum includes insurance, air conditioning, GPS and no mileage limit. You do not need to buy a separate policy at the counter.

When you compare quotes, read the fine print on two things:

If anything happens on the road, stop somewhere safe, take photos and message us on WhatsApp straight away. We will guide you through it. One rule matters more than any policy: insurance does not protect a driver without a valid licence.

How Pickup and Return Work

Where you collect the car

Cars are picked up at our La Veleta location, Sur 8, La Veleta. In-store pickup is free. If you are staying in Aldea Zama, Region 15 or the Hotel Zone, message us before you book to ask about bringing the car to you; our Tulum delivery service page lists the zones and fees.

24-hour blocks and late returns

Rentals run in 24-hour blocks from your pickup time. Pick up at 10:00 and return by 10:00 the next day, and that is one day. Late returns cost US$14.29 per hour, so if your day trip is running long, message us and extend instead of paying by the hour.

Price and cancellation

Car rental is US$85.71 per day for 1 to 3 days and US$68.57 per day for 4 days or more, with no mileage limit. Cancellation is free up to 48 hours before pickup, 50% refund between 24 and 48 hours, and no refund inside 24 hours. Our car fleet is small, so for holiday weeks book early.

Do You Need a Car, a Scooter, or Both?

Match the vehicle to the route, not the other way round:

Plenty of groups do both: a scooter for the in-town days and a car for one or two big day trips. Our comparison of scooter rental vs car rental in Tulum breaks down the costs.
